Statement from the Joint CRA/CBA committee responsible for flood defence discussions with Dublin City Council.

There was a meeting held last week between the joint CRA/CBA group and Dublin City Council which was a follow on to the meeting held in January.

We were hoping to have a set of minutes to publish on the website this week but we are just trying to sign these off at the moment.

We hope to have them on the website very shortly and also plan to include them on the next newsletter.

Flood defence romance for Cian and Holly

We are delighted with the news that the romance of our own Cian Healy and Miss Ireland, Holly Carpenter was first sparked at last November's Flood Defence Protest in the Rugby club, as reported in this week's Evening Herald.

Both of them kindly volunteered their time to come and support our protest march back in November against the flood defence proposal and well.... they must have got talking!

While both are busy representing Ireland on the international stage of sport and beauty, the pair enjoyed a short break in London before the 6 Nations.

Both are active supporters of cancer research - Holly for breast cancer's 'Pretty n Pink' and Cian, pictured here sporting his Movember moustache.

We wish Cian well for the upcoming matches against Scotland and England and we also wish Holly well for her run in BBC's Sports Relief.

Looking forward to seeing them…

After lengthy discussions with Dublin City Council Engineering Department it has been definitively stated that they are not in a position to provide sandbag defences on the seafront due to cuts in their funding. In a a recent communication from Tom Leahy, Executive Manager (Engineering), DCC, he stated that “Dublin City Council does not have financial provision in the 2012 budget for purchase of any additional sandbags.”

This relates both to the provision of the large 1 tonne sandbags that were previously deployed and also the smaller sandbags that had previously…

Update on Meeting with Dublin City Council

A combined CRA/CBA group met with DCC officials on Tuesday as a follow up to the December Council meeting where the previous flood defence plan was rejected by councillors.  The purpose of the meeting was to allow DCC to formally communicate the decision of the council to ourselves and to agree the initial steps required to get a new design and consultation process underway. The following items were discussed:

  • Timeframe for new flood defence project
  • Interim flood protection plans
  • Special measures for weak points along the promenade
  • Overgrown…

Flood Defence Project - Wooden Bridge to Causeway Road

You may have read in the papers about a new approval being issued by An Bord Pleanala (ABP) in relation to a flood defence scheme in Clontarf.

This scheme is independent of the Alfie Byrne Road to Wooden Bridge proposal. It is for the stretch of coast that begins at the Wooden Bridge to the Causeway Road. This stretch is approximately 1.9km long.

The aim of this scheme is to provide higher quality pedestrian and cycling facilities, as part of the S2S scheme, and to protect the adjoining properties from the risk of coastal flooding.

The design methodology proposed for this…

Statement from CRA and CBA following DCC Meeting on Clontarf Flood Plan

On Monday night we got the result that we had all been hoping for. The current Flood Defence plan will not go ahead and Dublin City Council must now go back to the drawing board.

Given that just two months ago, we were a stroke of a pen away from this plan being given the go ahead, this is a turnaround of huge proportions and it is a massive victory for people power.

The people of Clontarf stood resolutely together against this plan and were backed by many other residents from all over Dublin. Our reward today is that we have a real opportunity to shape a new flood defence plan.…

Council plan unanimously rejected

Last night we all got the result we have been fighting so hard for with all of the Dublin City Councillors voting to reject the Flood Defence plan put forward by DCC.

We will have more on this later but for now we just wanted to thank all of the Councillors for backing us.

Attached is our event coverage from Twitter last night.

Pictured opposite are some of the members of the CRA/CBA Working Group who attended last night's meeting in City Hall.

Below is the text of our response to the ‘Final Report to Dublin City Council Meeting 5th December 2011’ issued by Dublin City Council (DCC) on 2nd December 2011.

The letter can be downloaded here in pdf format.

To: All City Councillors

We are disappointed to read the latest report issued by DCC in relation to the Clontarf Flood Defence scheme. DCC on the one hand acknowledge the overwhelming public opposition while on the other are recommending to Councillors that the plan be proceeded with.

We are dismayed and frustrated at the apparent…

Late last night DCC issued their 'final report' to Dublin City Councillors in advance of the Dublin City Council meeting on Monday 5th December.

We will have a detailed response to this report by tomorrow, Sunday, which we will post here on the website. (Update: View this story)

In the meantime, we can say we are disappointed to read the latest report. DCC on the one hand acknowledge the overwhelming public opposition to the plans while on the other are recommending to Councillors that the plan should be proceeded with despite this opposition.
